Why Shadow for leveling a priest

Shadow damage talents shorten fights and Spirit Tap refills mana after each kill — the classic loop that lets a priest quest non-stop. Holy and Discipline heal better, but neither kills faster.

  • Spirit Tap and damage talents are the engine; take them before any utility.
  • Shield → Shadow Word: Pain → Wand keeps mana high on easy mobs.
  • Wand specialization early is a quiet but real leveling speed boost.

The build below puts 49 points into Shadow and spreads the remaining 2 across the other trees for grind value. It is a starting skeleton, not a meta verdict — tuning changes every beta build.

Levels 10–20 (points 1–11)

The opening skeleton: cheap damage and resource talents that every early pull benefits from.

Order Level Talent Ranks Effect
1 10 Blackout 5/5 (5 pts) Gives your Shadow damage spells a 10% chance to stun the target for 3 sec.
6 15 Shadow Focus 5/5 (5 pts) Improves your chance to hit with Shadow spells by 5%.
11 20 Mind Flay 1/1 (1 pt) Assault the target's mind with Shadow energy, causing 63 Shadow damage over 3 sec and slowing their movement speed by 50%.

Levels 20–40 (points 12–31)

The tree deepens: signature multi-rank talents come online and kill speed climbs.

Order Level Talent Ranks Effect
12 21 Improved Mind Flay 2/2 (2 pts) Your Mind Flay now deals 20% more damage, gains 10 yards increased range, but slows the target's movement speed by 20%.
14 23 Spirit Tap 2/5 (2 pts) Gives you a 40% chance to increase your Spirit by 100% for 15 sec after killing a non-trivial target or when an enemy afflicted by your Vampiric Embrace dies. For the duration, 50% of your Mana regeneration will continue while casting.
16 25 Shadow Weaving 3/3 (3 pts) Your Shadow damage spells have a 100% chance to increase the Shadow damage you deal by 2% for 15 sec, stacking up to 5 times.
19 28 Vampiric Embrace 1/1 (1 pt) Afflicts your target with Shadow energy that causes all party members to be healed for 20% of any Shadow spell damage you deal for 30 sec.

23 32 Devouring Contagion 2/2 (2 pts) Reduces the mana cost of your Devouring Plague by 50%. Targets that die while Devouring Plague is active spreads it, jumping to a nearby enemy within 10 yds for the remaining duration.
